The 2021 Las Vegas Reunion ….

 A HUGE SUCCESS !!

It all started with a “Crew Party” on Monday evening at The Orleans Hotel in the Baliwick Pub & Grill.   As everyone arrived there were “Howdy’s & smiles”, Lots of “hugs”,  and plenty of “laughter”….. followed of course by a lot of “adult beverage” consumption.  It was a great “kick off” to three days of “hanging out” with our “best friends and flying partners” from WOA.

Throughout the entire three days of fun there was plenty of “catching-up” to do.  There was plenty of great “story-telling” and “reminiscing” about our World travels while hanging out in the Hospitality Suite or enjoying a visit to “The Strip” during the day.  Some “won” and some “lost” in the casino’s.  We enjoyed a wonderful dinner at the Tuscany Gardens Italian Restaurant on Tuesday evening, and that was followed by a “Super Banquet” at The Orleans on Wednesday evening to top everything off.   If you weren’t there you missed a great reunion ….. But then there’s always next year !!

“OPERATION AARDVARK”

“After the fall of World Airways a core group of employees quietly and methodically mobilized to insure that the historical artifacts of World Airways would be saved.  The story needs to finally be told.”

“Dubbed “Operation Aardvark”, (thanks Gibby Gibson) we worked very hard, silently and swiftly, to get as much of our history out of the building at 101 World Drive so that it would be preserved for all World Airways employees.  Considering a risky covert night op, we ultimately found an ally in John Graber, who helped us get hundreds of items out of there so that our history would be seen and known by present and future generations, and not sold piecemeal at the auction to be scattered to the winds.  Say what you will about John, he saw the importance of the mission, our determination and passion, and he made this happen for the benefit of all.  Many artifacts were rescued and lived in our garage for months until we could complete the logistics, with the capable assistance of founder Ed Daly’s Granddaughter June Daly Behrendt.  The items were inventoried, carefully wrapped and placed in a pod, and shipped late in the summer of 2014 to the Oakland (CA) Air Museum in the city where so much of World’s history was made.  Do you think Ed Daly was rolling over in his grave due to that pilot’s hat on his bronze?!  These photos were taken after we moved all the items from the building to our home, in advance of the auction.  The moving itself was not so bad, but cataloging and inventory on all of that was a big job!  Thanks to all on this team for making it happen.  We did it for World Airways and all the employees spanning 66 years!   The first slide shows our team, L-R, RK Smithley, Scotty Cunningham, Sherri Williamson, Tom Shoemaker, Chris Johnson, Mike Bakken, Butch Watson, Wally Rardon, and Jenny Ashmore, our main facilitator.   Scotty and Antonio Triplett rounded-up many of the items into the “secret” third floor electrical room for our procurement mission prior to the auction.  Ed Daly would be proud of this team!  We made it happen for World Airways. ”       R.K. A Poem by Dick Kalman

Special Flight Attendant Flying Days

“Twas your first day at World Airways starting your  training

Knowing that there were at least thirty more days remaining,

You were greeted by your instructors and dear Charlie Wall

Soon you realized you would become a Flight Attendant after all,

There were written exams, grooming, tours, and emergency drills

A jump down a slide and a swim to a raft provided some thrills,

You  went through many more FAA tests and evaluation

Then one day you went to the local hotel for graduation,

How can you forget how much fun it was to do that special skit?

All those in attendance and Mr. Daly especially enjoyed that bit,

Then it was off to your first line trip to who knows where

Onboard supervisors Wagers, Sykes, Martini and Kung were there,

You were told the cockpit guys up front were the best

Piloted by captains such as Wiseman, Healy, Keating and Vest,

As you think about some of your your favorite picks

How about magician Dick Menetti and his magic tricks?

You flew to places like Frankfurt, Yokota and Quala Lumpur

That was much more fun than any high-priced tour,

Then there was taking our dear military soldiers to Vietnam

Knowing many would not be returning home to dad and mom,

Though our dear World Airways in 2014 went away

We all know those special memories will always stay,

Frustration we have, coronavirus and masks we can not deny,

We will on New Years Eve happily tell 2020 goodbye,

So, I just want to let you know, I decided to write this poem to say,

I wish all my World Airways friends to have a very special day.

I’M OK AND YOU ARE OK – REMEMBER THAT-

SCAM ALERT

Jim Reese has notified me that he received an email message from someone impersonating John Ellington using the email address  Johnellington@Frontier.com.  When Jim replied to the return email address jeelbar@gmail.com  (which is not the real email address for John Ellington, it is similar but with the letters in a different order) he received another email saying that John did not have a place available where he could purchase ITunes gift cards, which he wanted to send to his grandchildren, and asked if Jim would go and purchase four $100 ITunes Gift Cards at WalMart for him and then send the card numbers and the PIN numbers for the cards to John.

Jim went to WalMart and asked the cashier about purchasing the cards and the cashier asked Jim what he was going to do with them.  Jim explained the situation to her and she “REFUSED TO SELL THEM TO HIM”.   She explained that this is “ONE OF THE BIGGEST SCAMS IN THE USA” right now.  If you do what is requested in the SCAM the recipients will just convert the cards to cash, and you will be out $400.

THE KEY TO RECOGNIZING THE SCAM IS THE EMAIL ADDRESS OF THE SENDER.

IT IS POSSIBLE THAT AN EMAIL ADDRESS OF SOMEONE ON THE ALUMNI WEBSITE LIST HAS BEEN COMPROMISED AND YOU COULD BE NEXT TO RECEIVED A BOGUS EMAIL.  BE SURE AND CHECK THE EMAIL ADDRESS OF THE SENDER AGAINST THE LIST ON THE WEBSITE IF YOU HAVE A QUESTION AS TO THE AUTHENTICITY OF THE ADDRESS OF THE EMAIL YOU RECEIVE.

DO NOT FALL FOR THIS SCAM.
